ACADEMY UPDATES Our academy coordinator, Luanna, leads regular primary partner school meetings with instructors and mentors to coordinate and ensure timely completion of curriculum development, programmatic planning and implementation at schools participating in the Mana Mele program.  Some of the other awesome work she’s doing includes surveying instructors, our advisory council, and student to analyze how best to improve the Mana Mele academy curriculum, creating and refining culture-based multimedia music education curriculum modules that are aligned with Common Core Standards, and providing support to our team of instructors. MENTORSHIP UPDATES Hālau Kū Māna Hālau Kū Māna students were paid a special visit by long-time musician and MM supporter “Papa Joe”Espinda. Papa Joe has been playing music for decades, as the keyboardist for Butch Helemano, B.E.T, Kawao and many more. Papa Joe spent many years learning various instruments such as `ukulele, keyboards, guitar, and the melodica. In this mentorship session, Papa Joe taught the haumāna basic and advanced `ukulele techniques, and songs such as Liko Martin’s “Nanakuli Blues” (also known as Waimanalo Blues) and “Hawai’i ’78”. Halau Lokahi Mahalo nui to Irie Love, Pu’unui Wong, and Gotaro – three awesome music-making mentors who shared their experiences, songs, and words of encouragement to Halau Lokahi ‘opio at a school wide assembly. This was a perfect way to cap off Irie’s last small group mentorship session at Halau Lokahi, where shared tips on vocal health, taught them vocal warm-up exercises and singing, while weaving in elements of dream-building, confidence, and tips for career success.
