Job Opportunity – Mana Maoli Seeks Project Coordinator

The Mana Mele Project – a collaboration between Mana Maoli, the MELE program at HCC, and 10 Hawaiian charter schools on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi – features a Music & Multimedia Academy, 4-in-1 solar-powered mobile studio, and Mentorships connecting pro artists with youth.

Mana Maoli has created an additional Project Coordinator position for this project, and is now accepting applications.

Oahu – Mana Mele Multimedia Instructor ($20/hr, 15hrs/wk, 50wks)

Hakipu’u Learning Center Public Charter School, Kaneohe HI

10hrs/wk instruction, 2hrs/wk prep, 3hrs/wk curriculum development

Minimum qualifications:

  • Strong background in video production, from pre to post-production.

ACADEMY UPDATES

Our academy coordinator, Luanna, leads regular primary partner school meetings with instructors and mentors to coordinate and ensure timely completion of curriculum development, programmatic planning and implementation at schools participating in the Mana Mele program.  Some of the other awesome work she’s doing includes surveying instructors, our advisory council, and student to analyze how best to improve the Mana Mele academy curriculum, creating and refining culture-based multimedia music education curriculum modules that are aligned with Common Core Standards, and providing support to our team of instructors.

Hālau Kū Māna

Hālau Kū Māna students were paid a special visit by long-time musician and MM supporter “Papa Joe”Espinda. Papa Joe has been playing music for decades, as the keyboardist for Butch Helemano, B.E.T, Kawao and many more. Papa Joe spent many years learning various instruments such as `ukulele, keyboards, guitar, and the melodica.

In this mentorship session, Papa Joe taught the haumāna basic and advanced `ukulele techniques, and songs such as Liko Martin’s “Nanakuli Blues” (also known as Waimanalo Blues) and “Hawai’i ’78”.
