Innonative and positive music in
support of initiatives aligned with Mana Maoli's vision and
purpose. Currently, our Maoli Music program is primarily volunteer-driven,
and hundreds of artists - who we refer to as the 'Mana
Maoli Collective' - have donated their time and talent
in support. This ranges from student and underground prodigies
to Hawaiiʻs favorite and most respected artists of various genres,
such as Aunty Genoa Keawe, John
Cruz, Jack Johnson, Paula Fuga,
Amy Hanaialiʻi Gilliom, Makaha
Sons, Ooklah the Moc, Natural
Vibes, Anuhea, Sudden Rush,
Kaumakaʻiwa Kanakaʻole, and
many more.
Our Maoli Music program currently includes:
Mana Maoli CDʻs and concerts - featuring student,
underground and pro artists collaborating in the studio and
onstage
- to raise awareness of the amazing success stories of Hawaiian
charter schools, despite the severe funding inequities they
face
- funds raised go to support Hawaiian charter schools and/or
Mana Maoliʻs own waʻa and music programs
Connecting artists to the youth
- Members of the Mana Maoli Collective visit schools to perform
and talk story
- Others provide mentorships to youth in their area of expertise
- singing, ukulele, guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, percussions,
DJ turntables, radio talk show host, engineering, making/playing
native instruments, and music management/promotion
- Afterschool Music Program - our first class begins September
2011 at Halau Lokahi Public Charter School, and is open
to youth ages 12-18. It will be taught by Wayne Enos of
Natural Vibrations, with curriculum assistance from Kainani
Kahaunaele
Cultural exchange/Hawaii representation
in Aotearoa
- In March 2010, representatives of the Mana Maoli Collective
from 6 islands formed an all-star group of well known and
underground musicians, kumu hula, and hula dancers. They were
the 1st to represent Hawaiians at the Pasifika festival in
Aotearoa in its 18 year history, a gathering of a quarter
million people from dozens of nations across the Pacific.
They also shared traditional Hawaiian music and hula, as well
as original, innovative ʻMaoli Musicʻ (a fusion of styles)
at nearly 2 dozen additional shows and workshops across many
cities, schools and marae
- In March 2011, another all-star group (with a mix of returnees
and new representatives) returned to Pasifika, adding to their
itinerary Nga Puhi, the largest tribal run festival; WOMAD,
the largest paid (sellout) festival of highest international
scope and calibre; and more workshops in the schools and community.
- Both trips allowed for much exchange of culture, knowledge
and inspiration with our Pacific Island cousins, especially
our Maori hosts. There were collaborations on and offstage
with many well respected artists/bands in Aotearoa (i.e. Katchafire,
1814, Tigilau Ness, Maisey Rika, 3Houses Down), as well as
kupuna, educators, dancers, and community/cultural leaders.
Substantial media exposure at the iwi (tribal) and national
level helped increase awareness and appreciation for Hawaiiʻs
music, dance and culture, as well as Mana Maoliʻs vision and
mission.
Future plans include:
- More school visits, and expansion of our mentorships and
afterschool programs
- A community co-op studio for music and video production,
accessible and affordable to youth and adults in the community.
- Mana Maoli CD, Volumes 1,2 and 3 - to be available for individual
song downloads for the first time (Holiday season 2011)
- Mana Maoli CD, Volumes 4 and 5 - 10 Hawaiian charter schools
will be contributing a track to our next CD project, along
with an exciting lineup of pro artist collaborations you dont
wanna miss!
- Aotearoa meets Hawaii mashup CD project - featuring at least
one Hawaii and one Aotearoa artist on each track. Again, you
will find 1st time collaborations across well respected artists
that you wonʻt wanna miss!
- Sneak previews (singles and EPʻs) of the upcoming music
projects mentioned above, are targeted to be released early
next year
